Carlton Bank is located in the Cleveland hills, north east England. It is on the north west edge of the North York Moors. From the top of Carlton Bank you get great views over the surrounding countryside.
It is used as a venue for a hill climb by Cleveland Wheelers and also the National hill climb championship in 1996.
It is relatively steady as you climb out of Teesdale, but once across the cattle grid in the middle of the climb, it becomes very steep – like most North York Moor climbs. It is a good 25% in places before you finally crest the climb on to Cringle Moor. There is a sheer drop down one side – which makes it a popular spot with hang-gliders.

“…Small wonder that many ended their rides lying on the grass being administered with oxygen by medics from County Durham Emergency Volunteers. The promoting club Cleveland Wheelers had thought of everything.”
National hill Climb Championship 1996
In 1996, Stuart Dangerfield won the National hill climb Championship with a near record winning margin of 22 seconds. He used 42*21 fixed and apparently there was a headwind at the finish. Jim Henderson won his first hill climb medal.
He told the CW reporter ‘Hill climbs have to be the best sort of event … it’s a shame more people don’t ride them.”

Hi Tejvan, thanks for providing a highly interesting and informative blog. Two weeks ago I was fortunate to spend a week in The NW Lakes,I took the opportunity to cycle an 82 mile route from Greystoke near Penrith taking in Hartside Killhope Cross and Chapel Fell.I’ve cycled a lot around Britain, but this was my first time on The Pennines (Great Dun Fell excepted) If you have the time and opportunity I would highly recommend a trip.Hartside has been chosen as a stage finish for this years Tour of Britain this will make a wonderful backdrop for TV coverage and spectators alike. Because of the areas remoteness these climbs are ridden by such small numbers (compared to hills in my native Surrey) Hartside last count on Strava 1031 riders and a mere 624 Chapel Fell. So many great hills in such a relatively small area, back in Surrey now I’m able to reflect with a feeling of huge privilege to have cycled in this beautiful little known region of Britain.
