Unlike many North York Moors climbs, this is not particularly steep, but it is long, and climbs 277m over 4.4 miles. The average gradient is just 4%, however, just after the start of the climb, there is a steep section as you climb out of the River Esk valley and up towards the moors. After this, the climb eases off, and there is a gentle rise to the top of the moors.
